From all of the things you can buy for your favorite girl or boy, why choose a toy kitchen? In two words: interactive pretend play. It encourages imagination. It encourages socialization. Multiple children can play kitchen together. And your child learns through role play as they imitate Mom and/or Dad with kitchen play.

Is my child or grandchild ready for a toy kitchen?

Some kids kitchens have small parts that may come off and pose a choking hazard for a younger child, so your child should be at least three years old. But there are designs which have smaller children in mind. You might select a toddler kitchen initially for a younger child and later progress to a larger play set. Also, a younger child may not be tall enough to reach everything on a larger play kitchen. There is a solution to this too. You might simply get a step stool like the one you are using in their bathroom.

How do I select a toy kitchen?

You need to decide on budget and location. How much do you want to spend on your child's kitchen? And where are you going to put it?

A play kitchen will be used for many years, so this needs to be factored into your budget. This would be one reason to choose a wooden over a plastic one. Wood is less likely to crack, fade or warp as it ages. TWooden kitchens are also more sturdy than than plastic, and many of the wooden ones are less expensive than a fully featured plastic play set.

You also need to decide which room in your home to place the children's kitchen. Two factors come into play: your room decor and available space. There are many styles and colors available. It should not be too difficult to find a toy kitchen to match, or at least not clash, with the decor of your chosen room.

How much space is available? If you have a play room, a multi-piece set would delight your child. Or perhaps, you need to choose a play kitchen that has a distinct front and back, so it can be placed against the wall. A free standing island style kids kitchen is another options.
